Cautions and Care In Using Essential Oils

Essential Oils are highly concentrated substances and it is important to be aware of, and follow, a few cautionary guildelines to help you to gain the most benefit from the oils.

Safety Directions: Please read the following carefully before using any essential oils.

Essential oils should not be taken orally unless under the guidance of a health care professional.

Do not use the following oils during pregnancy without professional advice: Basil, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Coriander, Hyssop, Jasmine, Juniper, Marjoram, Oregano, Myrrh, Peppermint (which should also be avoided while nursing), Rosemary, Sage and Thyme.
Some authorities recommend that you do not use any essential oils in the first trimester of pregnancy, again, check with a professional aromatherapist first.

If you have low blood pressure avoid chamomile and marjoram

If you have high blood pressure avoid rosemary

If you have kidney problems avoid black pepper and juniper

If you have epilepsy avoid black pepper, clary sage, fennel and rosemary

If you have problems with a low libido avoid marjoram

If you are going out into the sun do not use the photosensitive oils within 4 hours prior to exposure to sunshine - bergamot, lemon, sweet orange, grapefruit, mandarin, petitgrain

If you have consumed alcohol or are going to be driving or operating heavy equipment avoid clary sage, marjoram and ylang ylang

If you have sensitive skin always do a patch test on your inner arm by gently rubbing a small amount of the oil you want to use on the area and waiting for a few minutes to see if you are going to get a reaction.
The citrus oils are most prone to irritating sensitive skin.
